Shop and Dine under way

The annual Shop and Dine campaign in Westland is under way, with some changes due to the COVID-19 virus.

Due to the current pandemic-related events, the awareness campaign has shifted to supporting small businesses within the community and the importance of shopping local. The city TV commercials already on the air stress the importance of supporting small businesses facing economic downturn caused by the economic impact of the virus, nationwide. Radio ads will also be heard on the metro area air waves. The campaign also encompasses a large digital and social presence as well as billboards, according to a city spokesman. 

This is the 11th year for the six-week campaign which takes place annually during the holiday season and promotes Westland as a premier shopping district the has “Everything you want. Everything you need” for your holiday season shopping list.  The Shop and Dine district is anchored by the Westland Shopping Center and is surrounded by more than 160 shops, restaurants and services.

“Research suggests when you spend your money locally, over 68 percent stays within the local economy,” according to a prepared statement from the city.

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of our community,” commented Mayor William R. Wild. “These are the people that support our athletic teams, donate to our community events and volunteer for our non-profits. They need our help now more than ever.”
