Michigan Mask up

Fire department and Ministerial Alliance deliver 3,000 masks in city

Fire Chief Kevin Krause
Fire Prevention Month became COVID prevention month in Romulus this year as members of the fire department, along with several local churches, provided more than 3,000 masks to the community.

Fire Chief Kevin Krause began the effort when usual Fire Prevention Month activities were limited by the pandemic.

His effort was prompted by the request of an elderly resident seeking a face mask at the fire station. Krause contacted the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and was able to secure a large shipment of face masks which the firefighters distributed throughout the community, along with fire prevention materials.

Bags containing two masks and fire safety information were distributed by the firefighters at the Romulus Senior Center, Romulus Senior Towers and Whispering Willows Co-op as part of the Michigan Mask Up campaign.

With the help of Romulus City Councilwoman Tina Talley, who also serves as the secretary of the Romulus Ministerial Alliance, the masks and information were then delivered to Living By Faith Ministries, Living Rock Church, First Baptist Church of Romulus and Community United Methodist Church.

Krause said these were high-quality, well made masks and some are still available at the fire department, Romulus library, at city hall and in some other municipal buildings.

Krause said the effort is far from complete and that the department is waiting on more masks.

Talley said that the firefighters always help others in the community and that there are still six or seven churches where the masks and information could be distributed. She said the local pastors and the congregations were grateful for the masks which are now required in every public building.

Krause said the department is hoping to deliver another 1,000 of the masks, as they become available.
