‘Pal’entine party

Seniors celebrate holiday with visits from man’s best friend

There was a lot of love at the Valentine's celebration at Independence Village of Plymouth last month.

Residents and staff enjoyed visits from canine ambassadors who either live in the community or belong to staff members. Residents had the opportunity to sign up in small groups and watch as the visiting dogs performed tricks, paraded around in costumes, showed off their obedience training and “looked adorable.”

Residents voted for their favorite 'Best in Show' dog. The winner received a gift basket for both the dog and human companion. Residents made homemade doggie treats for all of the contestants during an activity session hosted at the residence. Registration sheets were distributed so residents could get to know the furry friends better.

A spokesman noted that this was one of the “first events that brought everyone together, but still at safe distances.” A majority of the residents and employees are now vaccinated, so events like this will be more common and more safe moving forward, she added.
