Sunshine Week prompts launch of new dashboard

The City of Westland has launched a new financial and community performance dashboard available at www.cityofwestland.com.

The new dashboard, powered by Michigan-based Munetrix, provides an insider's look at the financial health of the city by providing a convenient and easy-to-navigate portal for multi-year data regarding where city money comes from and where it is spent. Also included on the dashboard are other relevant financial reports and community data insights, according to a city spokesman.

The launch has coincided with “Sunshine Week,” which is an annual nationwide initiative that acknowledges the importance of open government. “Sunshine Week” was established in 2005 and occurs every year in mid-March, along with James Madison's birthday and National Freedom of Information Day on March 16. This year, “Sunshine Week” falls on the week of March 14 - March 20 and the new Westland transparency-focused dashboard launched on Monday.

The City of Westland also launched a Police Transparency Dashboard in September of 2020 which provides up-to-date transparency information about the police department to the public. The dashboard shows crime rates, arrest data, citation data, citizen complaints, officer use of force and training data for all of the department's 81 sworn officers and 25 civilian employees.

Both dashboards are available year-round at www.cityofwestland.com.

“Westland remains committed to practices that promote transparency,” commented Mayor William R. Wild. “Transparency is inextricably linked to good governing and public trust.”
