Rezoning for new apartment complex OK’d

Canton Township Planning Commissioners have approved a proposal to build several hundred apartments and new commercial property along Michigan Avenue between Lilley and Sheldon roads.
The proposed development will now go before the members of the township board of trustees for final consideration after a final review by the planning commission.
Commissioners considered the plan by Redwood Apartment Neighborhoods which had requested a rezoning of the land from commercial to combined residential and commercial, last year.
Following the rezoning, developers presented the plan for the combined development which includes two phases of construction. Apartments are slated to be built west of Morton Taylor Road during the first phase which includes the installation of a stormwater retention pond. The second phase includes construction east of Morton Taylor and the paving of the interior roadway. Developers said that the commercial portion of the project would be constructed after all the residential units are complete.
Those plans were not accepted by the planning commissioners as submitted, however. Commissioners asked for design changes which included varying the exterior look of the buildings.
A representative from the developer assured the commissioners that the plans would be reviewed prior to returning for a final approval before going before the board of trustees.
