Veteran's Haven, a volunteer group dedicated to helping veterans with food, shelter, clothing, counseling, and other needs, will have a new roof on the Wayne Road building. The non-profit group has been housed in the Wayne building for about 16 years, and time has taken a toll on the roof of the modest structure.
The roof was leaking and was simply worn out, explained Veteran Haven Acting Director Judy Berna who founded the effort in her home in 1997. In an average week, the organization will feed and/or supply 100 veterans with items purchased using donations.
Kroll Construction owners are donating all the materials and labor costs to replace the roof at the facility which is completely funded by donations of food, clothing and cash to help clothe and feed veterans of all military service organizations. The facility is staffed only by volunteers and does not pay salaries. The motto of the non-profit volunteer organization is “Veterans helping veterans.”
Work was expected to begin this week at the site, Kroll representatives said. Kroll Construction was founded in 1961 by Al Kroll and has been family owned and operated for more than 60 years.
“We're so happy that Kroll Construction can help us with this,” said Berna. “It's a significant cost and now we can direct those funds to helping more people.”
