Update to Canton Township Master Plan under way

The comprehensive Master Plan for Canton Township is being updated by the staff of the Planning Services Division.

The master plan is a long-range policy document designed to guide the community for the next 10 - 20 years on a variety of topics such as, land use, development, housing and neighborhoods, infrastructure, transportation and corridors, environmental preservation, and others.

As part of the update process, a variety of public engagement events and activities have been scheduled throughout the 12-18 month process. Events scheduled this month include comment boards set up at township facilities including the administration building, library, The  Summit, BLOCK and Cherry Hill Theater among others. Residents and business owners are encouraged to visit these facilities and leave comments.

All public engagement events and activities will be posted at www.canton-mi.org/masterplan. In the coming months, educational videos, drop-in Zoom chats, and surveys will be available. Planning staff members will also be attending community events such as the Summer Concert Series, Pride OUTside, and Rally on Ridge.

Residents interested in assuming a more active role in the update process were offered the opportunity to serve on the Master Plan Advisory Board. Planning Services personnel are is currently evaluating applications from residents, property owners, and business owners who expressed an interest in serving on the 12-15 member board. Board members will advise the planning commission and township board members on topics ranging from corridors and intersections, housing and neighborhoods, environmental preservation, transportation, and other topics relevant to the plan.

The board members will also  participate in monthly meetings, serve as ambassadors to the plan and help with public engagement.
