Canton Township is hiring and officials are offering several incentives to new employees.
Members of the township board of trustees approved an increase of $2.50 per hour for all part-time employees during the July 13 meeting.
The wage increase is part of an ongoing effort to address recent staffing challenges for attracting new hires, as well as retaining current part-time employees, officials said and the incentive will remain in effect through Dec. 31.
The township is currently attempting to hire employees for a variety of part-time positions, officials said, and this wage incentive is an effort to help address hiring challenges in the local market. This initiative was undertaken to encourage new hires to become township staff, as well as help retain Canton's dedicated current workforce, explained Greg Hohenberger, Canton Leisure Services director.
“Over the past few years, we have experienced challenges with filling several of our part-time and seasonal positions, but there is a significant lack of individuals coming forward to apply this year,” Hohenberger said. “Important steps such as this temporary part-time wage incentive will certainly go a long way in helping us recruit and retain more workers to weather this current situation that is, unfortunately, mirroring many of the national hiring trends.”
Hohenberger said the township is hiring a variety of part-time and seasonal positions which may include: Pheasant Run Golf Club grill cook; teen services staff; lifeguards; Summit on the Park staff; Therapeutic Recreation staff; park laborers; Pheasant Run Golf Course staff; custodial staff; Canton Sports Center staff and others. In addition, Canton Township has also implemented a referral incentive program, which offers $100 to any current township employee for recruiting a part-time, seasonal, or variable employee from now until Dec. 31. To receive this special incentive, any potential recruits must list the township employee on their applications and work 250 hours within the first 6-months of employment with the township.
